Penrose Square is the redevelopment of a circa 1970 strip shopping center into an 800,000 square-foot transit-orientated mixed-use project (residential, retail, parking). It comprises 299 luxury apartments, a 57,000 square foot Giant Food store, and 40,000 square feet of urban retail and garage parking for 735 cars. The project is required to meet LEED standards, and a portion of the site will be dedicated to the County for an urban town square. Penrose was conceived under Arlington County’s innovative “Form Based Code” entitlement process. Construction started in April 2009, and financing was provided by Wachovia and Royal Bank of Scotland.
